WACC-Africa appoints new officers Print E-mail

The WACC Africa region has appointed new members of the Regional Executive Committee (REC) at a general assembly and a seminar held in Kigali, Rwanda, 14 -15 March 2011.

The new members are:

  • Rev. David M Wanless (South Africa) – President
  • Dr. Tharcisse Gatwa (Rwanda) - Vice president
  • Kpalla M. Mathilde (Togo) - Secretary
  • Andrew Chisamba (Malawi) - Treasurer

Four alternates were also elected. They include:

  • Ninsima Shallon- Uganda
  • Catherine Ouma – Kenya
  • Rev. César Ahouantchede – Benin
  • Simeon Havyarimana - Burundi

Following the assembly, participants issued a communiqué calling on communicators and media professionals to increase their capacity in reporting peace and justice stories from “a gender aware perspective.” (Read the full communiqué here…)
 
Prior to the assembly, a seminar on “Media, Gender Justice and Peace-building" was held,  bringing together WACC members and partners, journalists, church leaders, community leaders, communication practitioners and other stakeholders involved in peace building, gender and communication.

WACC Media and Gender Justice programme manager who is also the staff liaison for the region, Sarah Macharia, led a presentation titled  “On the global stage: UNSCR 1325 and subsequent UN resolution on women’s involvement in conflict and peace building”. The seminar was opened by Archbishop Onesphore RWAJE of the Anglican church of Rwanda.  It was a follow up to another seminar organized by the region in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania 26-27 March, 2010. (See details of the seminar here...)
